A little about Old Fort, NC
Hey Judith; That sounds like a girl name to me, and I hate to say, I do not know you any better than I know of Adam's house cat, but I do know of the fountain you refer to at Old Fort, NC, matter of fact I've been drinking out of it for years, from early childhood, and every time I go near there I have to stop, and get a few swigs of that wonderful stuff, the last time I was there was in 2004, and can only hope it hasn’t stopped flowing.
As for the beginning of the Catawba River my Daddy (Paul Q. Beach) told me that he had been there, and that there is a Catawba Falls on the river, in the area, that’s equal to if not superlative to Linville Falls, he also said that it was quite a hike to get there, and did not seem to be overly willing to try it again, when we were there in 1987, we did drive along the river south west of Old Fort a couple of miles until we came to a gate with a no trespassing sign on it, and then decided to turn back, we were still pretty much on flat land just before making the climb up Black Mountain, he did say there was a pretty good hiking trail up to the falls as he remembered from childhood, of course, I have never seen the falls, but would like to someday.Apparently it would require a good bit of investigation to find the best route to take in getting there.
